Announcing the Flower Farm

I am overjoyed to announce the next step for Florence Frances Flowers - The Flower Farm! Coming to Maynards Farm along Brenchley Road, Matfield, in the Autumn. Whilst the flowers won't be available for PYO until next season, I'm hoping to be able to provide autumnal workshops like wreath making and pumpkin styling, which will continue throughout the Christmas season with even more workshops, and possibly even some parties.

The farm is looking very bare at the moment as we have JUST been given the lease, but I will keep you updated with the progress so that you can follow along and be abreast of any fun opportunities. Until then I have some hard work ahead of me. Once the official business is taken care of and financing obtained it will be time to prepare the land. I will be using the no-dig method to lay out flower beds which I have already planned and am itching to just get on with! This involves mapping the plan out on the ground using string and a very long tape measure, and then laying cardboard down as a bed for the compost. This method eradicates the need to dig over the land which helps to preserve a healthy ecosystem. The no-dig method was created by Charles Dowding and has so many benefits that it's actually quite a shock that not many people utilise it.

• Time saving - no digging, no weeding, less watering

• Less weeds (this is a big one) - and the weeds that do grow are nice and easy to remove

• Greater fertility and better results

• Improved soil structure - stronger roots, better growth

• Retained moisture

• Soil organisms - mycorrhizal fungi, etc.

• Less costly - no tiller, less water, more abundant harvests

• Less effort - plant into the ground easily with each rotation

I'll also be putting up both a polytunnel and bell tent, which will allow me to grow and store seeds, tubers, and bulbs on site and en masse (much more than the tiny 3x2 greenhouse at home). The bell tent is going to be home to the workshops and parties, and you better expect the most adorable decoration and cosy atmosphere ever. Think fairy lights, home-made bunting, cosy furniture, and a delightful wood burning stove for copious cups of tea and possibly even some mulled wine for Christmas.
